When walking slowly seems too fast

I’ve noticed an extraordinary amount of fungi this year. Apparently there’s been extra. So many different types – so exciting! Like a whole ‘nother world, a miniature world. I’ve been entranced.

And yet I nearly stood on these guys in the photo. We were at the marvellous Westonbirt Arboretum and I was mesmerised by a tree (as often happens to me). Drawn towards it I suddenly noticed fungi everywhere, and stopped to become mesmerised by them instead…only to discover more and more of them. In fact I was completely surrounded – stranded on a tiny island of earth without these tiny worlds.

So often I find myself noticing more and more detail, particularly when walking in a wood. As I look more closely I see smaller and smaller worlds around me until it seems that even walking slowly is somehow too fast.
